| Historical Story |

Nakashima river is home to Meganebashi, a.k.a Spectacles Bridge, Japan’s oldest stone arch bridge. During Japan’s isolationist period, the river was used to transport goods from foreign ships anchored in Nagasaki Port to various towns along the river.

▲Starting with Meganebashi , the area is full of similar bridges including Fukurobashi, Uoichibashi and Higashi Shinbashi. There are even heart stones under the bridges!

The Nakashima river was key to commerce, running through craftsmen’s towns to and from the port of Nagasaki. The river and its many historic stone arch bridges, including Meganebashi, is where you can feel the passage of time. Tourists visit the area for its historical ambiance, the murmuring river and the pleasant atmosphere.
